UNLIKELY BEDFELLOWS

FATE SEEMS TO HAVE A HABIT of bringing together strange bedfellows, common interest often outweighing mutual distrust and by submerging petty self-interests creates a vital new relationship. Humankind’s history is littered with such events. Military and religious alliances are just such examples. Sometimes though, fate can be cruel and the new partnership can be as destructive as a bad marriage.

Tinsley and Rotherham Forge did not enjoy a close business relationship. Tinsley staff felt they were not to be trusted. They broke agreements. In short, we had as little to do with them as possible, but...they were our biggest competitor and the mysterious buyer of Tinsley’s shares, had designs which could affect us both.

Rotherham Forge & Rolling Mills Co Ltd was founded in 1893 but could lay claim to a much older ancestry, going back to 1754. In that year the Earl of Effingham granted a lease for a piece of land in the manor of Kimberworth to a group of local men. William Fairbank’s plan described the land as being ‘at the head of Rotherham Mill Weyre’ and known as Forge Island. It was in many respects similar to the site Dyson & Shirt would choose for their mill and was presumably chosen for much the same reasons. The Don had recently been canalised and Forge Island was ‘twixt river and cut’.

The lease, signed on the -

‘29th day of September in the 28th year of our Sovereign Lord George II was between Thos. Earl of Effingham deputy Earl Marshall of England and Saml. Walker of Masboro, Iron founder and Aaron Walker of Masboro, Jonathan Walker of Grenoside in the Parish of Ecclesfield and Jonathan Crawshaw of the same place’.
